President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says the Tuesday's molotov cocktails attack at Tempo magazine office may be an attempt to pit Tempo and the police, which are at odds recently after the magazine published its June 28-July 4 edition highlighting enormous bank accounts allegedly belonging to some senior police officers.
Large copies of the edition reportedly were missing on the first day of its circulation, with some "men in police uniforms" allegedly trying to prevent them from reaching the public by buying them in big numbers.
The molotov attack occurred just when Tempo and the police planned to settle the dispute amicably and out of court, after the latter's earlier intention to sue the magazine because of its "defaming and humiliating" use of piggy bank in the cover of the disputed edition.
"I've heard about the molotov attack at Tempo office and an attack on an anti-graft activist (Indonesia Corruption Watch Tama Satrya Langkun, who was beaten by several strangers very early on Thursday morning)," the President said Thursday as he opened a plenary Cabinet session at the Presidential Office.
"It is very possible that when two parties are at odds and want to settle the problem properly, there is another party (who wants to disrupt it)," he added.
The President urged that the police immediately find the attackers and reveal their motives to clear things up.
"Save everyone. Don't let people set against each other. Don't let anyone take opportunities from the situation," he said.
